The under 14’s finish off the year in great style by adding the Cullen Cup to the trophy cabinet to join the All Ireland Division 3 Feile Shield and the under 14 “B” Championship.
The boys took on St Kevin’s in the final of the Cullen Cup Final last Wednesday evening (11/11/15) in Roundwood. The competition had been run off over the last four weeks with Bray Emmet’s, AGB, St Kevin’s and An Tóchar the teams participating in the competition. Our boys knew that it was going to be a tough game as we had been previously been beaten by St Kevin’s in the group stages of the competition and St Kevin’s had topped the group unbeaten.
We started the game very brightly with Oisin Cullen and Cian McHugh taking control of the midfield area in the early exchanges, while Gavin Fogarty and Jack Lawlor were dominating in the halfback line. Two points by Niall Gaffney and an Oisin Cullen point put this into a three points lead after 10 minutes. Our defence were standing very solid in the early exchanges especially the fullback line of Eoin Murphy, Luke Kenny and Bobby Brady.
St Kevin’s kicked the next score before good work from Tarla Fanning and Ciaran Byrne set Oisin up for his second point of the game. St Kevin’s scored the next point before taking the lead with a well taken goal by their corner forward to give them a one point lead. Niall Gaffney hit the last score of the half with a long range point to leave the site level at half time An Tóchar 0-5 St Kevin’s 1-2.
Kian Brady proved to be an inspirational substitute at half time as two minutes into the second-half he brilliantly found the back of the St Kevin’s net with a very well taken goal. St Kevin’s hit back with the next point before Mark Curley and Dale Brady combined to set up Jordan Brady for his first point. St Kevin’s fought back again to kick the next two scores and leave just one point between the teams.
Our lads were in no mood to let this game slip away with Darragh Tierney in goal, Sam Ireland and Christopher Murphy making sure St Kevin’s got no easy scores. While Niall Byrne, Rowan Hayes and Reese Scott all came off the bench to help contribute to the teams cause in the final quarter. It was in that final quarter when the game was won as we kicked four points without reply with three Niall Gaffney points and a very well taken point by Darragh Fee. Final score An Tóchar 1-10 St Kevin’s 1-5

It was a great all-round team performance and fittingly Oisin Cullen produced a man of the match performance to help us win the Cullen Cup in memory of his grandad. It was also very fitting that our team captain Cian McHugh called upon Oisin to lift the trophy presented by the Cullen family.
