An Tochar 2-12 V Rathnew 1-8
10th April 2013, ‘C’ League, Aras An Tochar.
This was our first game of the year for our under-14 boys team, it provided all the tension associated with our first fixture as one would expect. Initially we had to pull out of the Feile Competition that was held earlier this year due to shortage of players and we thought that we might suffer the same fate in the league. However with some players returning and some very exciting U-12 players stepping up to the mark, we had a total of 16 players who were ready to get the league campaign off to a winning start.
Once the positions were sorted and players were given their positional advice and pep talk by Paul, they lined out and stemmed a bit of pressure within the first 5 minutes of the game, as their opponents had the benefit of playing games prior to this match. However, undeterred and full of energy we drove forward in numerous attacks with exciting play from our forwards and half-back line which resulted in us going in front to which we never looked back and kept a health 6 point lead at the break (2-4 to 0-4).
The defence stay focused throughout and not only broke up the opponents play but used their possession wisely to counter attack and drive home the first victory of the campaign. All players got time on the field that lined up (wishing Josh a speedy recovery with his hamstring) and here’s hoping that this talented squad can continue the form and have a great season. Special mention to our U-12’s that delivered a great showing in an all round squad performance, that delighted the hardy supporters who sat through the cold evening and cheered us on, along with the team Mentors.
The squad for the night was Greg McHugh, John Kavanagh (captain), Joe McLaughlin, Jake Power, Josh Carruthers, Matthew Byrne, Shane Keenan, Dylan Delamere, Conor Devlin, Sean Byrne, Dylan Graham, Mikey Ahearne, Niall Gaffney, Gavin Fogarty, Oisin Cullen and Mark Curley.
